Staying Motivated in Internet Marketing

Please note: This was written specifically for Warrior Forum.

The number one reason people fail with Internet Marketing is because they lack motivation. Whether you’re running small sites with Adsense, large sites with CPA, or doing anything else in Internet Marketing, motivation is the key element to success. Unfortunately, motivation can be extremely difficult to maintain, especially in the early stages of Internet Marketing. The top dogs have their massive incomes to keep them motivated; but what about the newbies?

This guide was created to hopefully help teach, encourage, and motivate everyone here on Warrior Forum. I’m writing this to help others. I have absolutely no other intention besides that. I don’t want your money or email or anything in return. I want you to learn from my success and failures and hopefully be an even better Internet Marketer than I am.

Create a plan

You can’t approach Internet Marketing without a solid plan. Before you buy a domain or get starting doing anything, create a plan. It doesn’t even have to be a good one. And in all honesty, it probably won’t be at first. You just need to know where you’re going. Monitor the forum and see what others have said is the best strategy for your chosen marketing method, then come up with a simple plan. If you’ve already bought a domain and  don’t have a plan, that’s fine. The next step in your plan should be to try and find out what’s next! Research Warrior Forum and you will find thousands of topics on virtually every subject. Regardless of what type of Internet Marketer you are, you can get help there if you ask nicely or make good use of the search button. Also, be prepared to lose money. This is going to happen at first and should be part of your plan. But if you think about it, you’re not losing the money, you’re investing it. Don’t approach any type of marketing online that requires capital up front and expect to get it back quickly. It simply doesn’t work like that.

I would advise you to create a PowerPoint presentation for yourself with an overview of what your plan is. Include steps that you want to take, reviews steps that you have taken, and set a rough deadline for yourself for the different steps.

Stick with your chosen niche

One mistake that I see many people make is jumping from niche to niche. They start a website and become discouraged after a few days because they aren’t making money. Then they start questioning if they chose the right niche, and then decide to change it. This is not the right approach! If you are expecting to make an income within a few days, you will never be in the right niche. Yes, it’s entirely possible, but starting a website takes time and isn’t something that just happens over night. So my advice here is simple: stick with your chosen niche and don’t change just because you haven’t made a profit within a few days. Continue working on your site or marketing method, add content, create backlinks, and you will see the income flow in after a few days.

Record your progress

This is something that even I struggle with. Some days I will spend 15 hours at the computer and then question whether or not I actually did anything productive. One of the best things that I can recommend in this instance is to record your progress. After 6 hours of work or so, write down what you’ve done and note things that you wish to do in the future. I keep a document on my desktop that includes everything that I’ve done since I started Internet Marketing. I record everything. If I edited my website’s wordpress theme, I write that down. If I researched a topic for my new website, I write that down. The idea here is to remind yourself that you actually have done work as well as keep track of what you plan for the future are.

Talk to others about what you’ve done

Believe it or not, there are people around you that would love to talk about what you’ve done online. I like talking to my dad about my internet endeavors. He’s someone that really cares about me and wants me to succeed online even more than I already have. He always wants to know what new things I’ve done and is always willing to give suggestions.

Keeping yourself motivated is much easier when you have other people who want to keep up with your progress and hear about your successes and failures. Try to find someone like this in your life. Maybe it’s your significant other, your friend, or even your mom or dad.

Don’t compare yourself to others

Under no circumstance should you ever compare yourself to other internet marketers.  If you begin to do this, you will fail. People love to gloat and exaggerate about their income online so keep that in mind. If anything, view their posts and threads about how much money they are making as motivation to ultimately beat them.

You are you and they are them.

Spend a little extra time working, but not too much

Entrepreneurs work incredibly long hours, especially when they are starting their businesses. And being an internet entrepreneur, this is no different. While getting started, spend a little extra time working instead of watching your favorite TV show or movie. Skip American Idol and start building those backlinks that you’ve been meaning to get around to for several days. Stay off YouTube (my biggest downfall) during your lunch break! If you ever have extra time on your hands, start thinking and planning of what you could do to separate yourself from your competition.

At the same time, though, remember not to work too hard or too much. This is probably where I fail the most. It’s important to take breaks during your workday. Clear your mind by taking a walk outside or by going to lunch with a friend. Your brain needs a break just as much as your body. Just remember: you will have much more time to take a break when you have money flowing in on autopilot after you get your website started! So get back to work once your mind is clear.

Conclusion

That’s it guys, that’s all I have to share on the subject. All of these things I have learned by mistake and I’m nowhere near perfect yet. I still struggle with motivation at times, but doing the things listed in this short guide always seem to help. Good luck to all of you!

Cheers,

Clayton Rice
